About Nopar Foundation
Welcome to Nopar! Our vision is to touch lives in a manner that creates indelible memories. We confront the most intractable problems in health, education, livelihoods, and climate change. We are unorthodox and intentional. Our approach is to invest in things that make the most meaning to people. We address deep-rooted injustices in health, education, livelihoods, and the environment with passion and innovation. Nopar is committed to making the world a better place and improving lives in our communities starting in North Alego, Siaya County, and to communities across Africa.
OUR STORY
The quality of life has changed in many parts of Africa. Communities have transformed and many changes have been experienced as a result of better access to education, health, and technology. However, in many other places, villages seem to have been stuck in the past. Poverty is rampant, preventable illnesses still kill people, access to safe water and sanitation is unavailable, children fail to complete school, progression to higher learning is limited, and environmental degradation exacerbates an already bad situation.
The above seems to characterize our community in North Alego, Siaya County. In this community of nearly 50,000 people, there is only one public primary healthcare facility with an average access distance of nearly 15 km. Whereas the number of primary schools has increased over time, secondary schools are limited. In addition, the quality of infrastructure in these schools is wanting. There are limited facilities for teaching science and other technical subjects. School dropout is high, especially for girls as a result of early pregnancy and distance in access. Progression to higher levels of education is limited and college-level graduation rates remain low. In our community, incomes are low and poverty rampant which makes access to essential basic social services low. The low-income levels lead to the inability of parents to take their children to better-performing schools whose costs they cannot afford. There is no running water and waterborne diseases are common. Due to deteriorating soil quality, food production is low leading to high levels of malnutrition.
Despite the above and many challenges facing our community, we believe that we can lay the foundation for a better future for our community. We believe in the power of communities to define solutions to their problems. We believe that when we come together as a community, we can find solutions to our problems in health, education, livelihoods, and climate change.
Nopar was founded on the idea that as communities in North Alego, we have solutions to these problems. We believe that, by harnessing our collective efforts and partnering with others, we can turn the tide and create a more promising future for our community. We are convinced that the solutions we shall craft as a result of coming together could be a template that other communities facing similar challenges can replicate to solve their problems.
Through our work, we shall solve the most pressing needs of our community. We shall be responsive to our community’s needs and the solutions “by us” and “for us” will transform and leave an indelible memory in our community for generations to come.
